Trail Etiquette & Seasonal Conditions
Recreate Responsibly
Ken-Caryl Ranch trails are maintained by staff and community volunteers. Trail conditions can change quickly, especially during winter and after storms. Help protect the trail system by making informed decisions before you head out.
When Trails Are Muddy
- Avoid using trails during muddy conditions
- Wait at least 48 hours after rain or snowmelt
- If you’re leaving tracks, it’s too wet—please turn around
- Choose south-facing trails, which dry faster
Stay on the Trail
If you encounter mud:
- Go through it, not around it
- Stepping off trail widens paths and damages vegetation
Seasonal Notes
- Trails are often firmer in the morning and softer in the afternoon
Why It Matters
Widened trails and deep ruts increase maintenance needs and impact the natural environment. Responsible use helps protect the trail system and supports the volunteers who maintain it.
Trail Conditions & Updates
Trail maintenance is ongoing throughout the Ken-Caryl Ranch trail system. Current work includes vegetation trimming to improve sight lines and light tread maintenance in select areas. Seasonal contract maintenance has also been completed.
Wildcat Trail (private trail) now open
Wildcat Trail, a three-mile single-track loop in the backcountry, is now open for hiking, trail running and mountain biking.
This project was largely built through volunteer efforts, with more than 2,000 hours contributed by Ken-Caryl Volunteer Trail Coordinators and community members. These efforts play a key role in maintaining and improving the trail system while helping reduce overall costs.
