Community Park Master Plan
Community Park is entering an exciting new chapter. As one of Ken-Caryl Ranch’s most well-loved community spaces, the park is being thoughtfully planned to support recreation, connection and accessibility for generations to come.
Located across from Shaffer Elementary School on Sangre de Cristo Road, Community Park has long served as a hub for youth sports, playground activities, picnics and community gatherings. Through the Community Park Master Plan process, the Ken-Caryl Ranch Metropolitan District is working with residents to guide the future of the park and ensure improvements reflect the needs and priorities of the community.
About the Master Plan
The Community Park Master Plan is a long-range planning effort focused on how the park can best serve residents over the next 30 years. Community feedback plays an important role in shaping future improvements and helping prioritize recreation amenities, accessibility, infrastructure, and gathering spaces.
The Metropolitan District partnered with BrightView Design Group to lead the planning and design process. The goal is to create a balanced, community-focused park that supports both active recreation and neighborhood character.
Current Project Updates
Phase 1A: Pickleball Courts
The first funded phase of the Community Park improvements includes the construction of five lighted pickleball courts in the southwest corner of the park near existing recreation amenities. This phase represents the only currently approved and funded portion of the larger master plan project.
Key project highlights include:
- Five lighted pickleball courts
- Designed for accessibility and community recreation
- Located near existing facilities for convenience
- Estimated completion target: May 2026
- $600,000 budgeted for Phase 1A improvements
- Currently progressing through Jefferson County permitting and review processes
Future concepts shown in the master plan — including a plaza area and possible restroom facilities — are not currently approved or funded for construction.
Pickleball Court Lighting Information
Lighting for the proposed courts has been designed to support evening recreation while minimizing impacts on nearby homes and preserving the surrounding night environment. Planned features include:
- Lights automatically turn off at 9 p.m.
- Lighting dims to 50% brightness at 8:30 p.m.
- DarkSky-approved fixtures to reduce light pollution
- House-side shields to limit light spill into residential areas
- No upward light emission
- Lighting designed to remain contained within the court area
Traffic & Parking
Traffic and parking studies were completed as part of the planning process to evaluate how future improvements may affect the surrounding area. Findings indicate that existing parking and nearby parking options can accommodate expected demand while maintaining manageable traffic flow.
Community Park is also connected by sidewalks and trails, making it easy for residents to walk or bike to the park.
Community Engagement
Resident feedback has been central to the master planning process. Community meetings and surveys have helped shape proposed improvements and future priorities for the park.

History of Community Park
Community Park was developed in 1992 and 1993 after the Ken-Caryl Ranch Metropolitan District acquired the 14-acre property from a land developer who had originally planned housing for the site. Since then, the park has become one of the community’s primary recreation destinations, supporting youth athletics, playground access, picnics, and neighborhood gatherings.
The park’s location adjacent to Shaffer Elementary and along several community greenbelts continues to make it an important recreation and community space for residents of all ages.
